MyAcademicID
Federated identity layer for education and student mobility
MyAcademicID is the GÉANT service providing a common federated identity layer for education and student mobility.
Built on top of the GÉANT Core AAI Platform and developed in line with the AARC Blueprint Architecture, it allows European service infrastructures, particularly those supporting the Erasmus+ programme and European Universities Alliances, to deliver a common, consistent and seamless authentication experience when authenticating users.
It leverages eduGAIN and additional trusted authentication and identification services as eIDAS.

How it works
Following the AARC Blueprint Architecture, MyAcademicID acts as a proxy, a single, trusted connection point between identity federations and student services, handling the complexity of cross-domain authentication on behalf of students and service providers. MyAcademicID:
- lets students use the credentials issued by their home university or their national citizen eID to access student services when studying abroad;
- links each student to a single European Student Identifier (ESI) issued by their home organisation, consistent across organisations and countries;
- supports federated single sign-on (SSO) across institutions and borders;
- shares only the data a service actually needs, protecting student privacy; and
- integrates with eduGAIN, eIDAS, and other trusted identity sources.
Supported by MyAcademicID
MyAcademicID currently:
- enables participants on Erasmus+ exchanges, and those enrolled in European University Alliances, to authenticate for their mobilities abroad using their home institutional account;
- supports authentication to Erasmus+ services, including the Erasmus+ App and the Online Learning Agreement; and
- supports European University Alliances by letting students follow cross-country, cross-university curricula with a single academic identity, and enabling the safe, secure exchange of student data between member institutions.
IdP of Last Resort
Provided through MyAcademicID, the Identity Provider (IdP) of Last Resort is a fallback solution designed for students whose universities are not yet connected to eduGAIN. It ensures these students can securely log in and generate their European Student Identifier (ESI) to access Erasmus+ services.
The IdP of Last Resort currently supports students from 21 Countries and over 500 Higher Education Institutions.
